Transfer Students

The Transfer Center provides services to transitioning undergraduate students through pre-admission advising. They are dedicated to providing information, referrals, and support to transfer students to ensure a smooth and seamless transition to Mason. Refer to the transfer newsletter and the Transfer Center website for more information about their services.

The Admissions Office evaluates all transcripts. Students receive a formal evaluation of transfer credit following the offer of admission. Students who have questions about their transfer evaluation will need to contact the Admission Office.

Mason only accepts courses with a grade of “C” or better. Only credits transfer, grades do not. Only courses with Mason equivalents transfer.

Some courses on a student’s transcript evaluation are listed with the course title followed by three dashes (e.g., ANTH---). This means the Admissions Office was not able to equate the course to an exact Mason course designation. In order to have this course reevaluated, the student must complete the Transfer Credit Re-Evaluation Appeal Form. For example, if a student took an anthropology course at a different school and it came in to Mason as ANTH---, the student would take the course description to the Anthropology department and ask them to reevaluate the course. The academic department will decide the appropriate course designation, if any.

Some courses on a student’s transcript evaluation are listed with a “U” or an “L”
(e.g., PHIL U253 or ENGL L396). The “U” means the course is counted as an upper- level course and the “L” is counted as a lower-level course.

Courses taken at a non US school that are accepted by Mason, will often transfer in as elective credit (i.e., CS---, HIST---, HUM---). Students must complete the Transfer Credit Re-Evaluation Appeal Form.

Students who receive the required score on AP, IB, or CLEP exams will receive college credit for the exams that they have taken. The scores must be sent to Mason by the appropriate agency (i.e., AP scores are sent by the College Board). A listing of the courses and scores needed can be found at the Admissions web site.

Students must have 120 credits to graduate including 45 credits of upper division (300-400 level) hours. At least 30 credits must be taken at Mason including twelve or more upper-division credits in the students major.

Transfer credit from institutions that operate on the quarter system are transferred by multiplying quarter credit hours by two-thirds.

Physical education activity courses generally do not satisfy any requirements in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, College of Science, School of Management, or The Volgenau School of Information Technology and Engineering.
