placement exams

Credit by Exam

Many students who enter college may have taken advanced high school courses or dual enrollment courses for which they may receive college credit. Students may also have opportunities to take other types of exams while at the university to receive credit or have the requirement waived. Please refer to the Admissions Credit by Exam website for information about the exams and what scores are required to receive credit.

Students should be aware that duplicate credit will not be awarded. Students may only receive advanced standing once for a particular course at Mason. For example, if a student takes AP English and IB English they may only receive credit for one of those courses at Mason.

Math Placement Exam

Students must take a math placement exam for all MATH courses unless they have taken their required MATH courses elsewhere and are transferring them to Mason. The placement exam will be offered at Orientation and at various times throughout the year. Consult with your advisor at Orientation if it is unclear which course(s) you will need. The Mathematical Sciences Department website provides testing information and a schedule of when the tests are being offered.

Foreign Language Placement Tests

Proficiency through the intermediate level in a foreign language is required for most B.A. degrees. To determine the appropriate level at which to begin please refer to the Modern and Classical Languages website on placement tests. Students should speak to their advisor if they have any questions about the foreign language requirement.
